Benefits of a water softener

You'll notice the difference from day one

London's hard water is full of calcium and magnesium. Taking it out changes how your water feels, how your home looks and how long your appliances last.

A parent cuddling a baby wrapped in a soft hooded towel after bath time
Kinder to delicate skin Lots of families find softened water feels gentler at bath time, with no soap scum left on the skin.

Richer, creamier lather

Soap, shampoo and shower gel lather properly in soft water, so you use less and rinse cleaner.

Feels kinder on skin

Soap rinses off properly in soft water, so less residue is left behind. Many people say their skin feels less dry.

Longer machine life

Cleaner, scale-free water protects washing machines, dishwashers, kettles, showers and your boiler.

Lower running costs

Scale on heating elements makes them work harder. Without it, appliances heat water more efficiently.

Less cleaning

Say goodbye to chalky taps, cloudy shower screens and scale around the plughole.

Softer laundry & hair

Towels stay fluffy, clothes stay brighter and hair feels softer and shinier.

Protect what you've invested in Limescale is the number one enemy of anything in your home that heats or carries water.

Softened water is not a medical treatment. Speak to your GP about any skin condition.

London water hardness checker

How hard is your water?

Most of London and the South East has some of the hardest water in the UK. Hard water leaves limescale on taps, showers, kettles and inside your boiler, which pushes up energy bills and shortens appliance life.

We'll also estimate how much sodium your water would contain once softened, so you can think about the right drinking-water set-up. It's a rough guide to what's typical for your area: for exact figures, check with your water supplier.

Just the first part is fine, e.g. W4.

An approximate guide, not official data. Figures are typical for your postcode area and vary by street and season. For an exact reading, check with your water supplier. We also test your water on site at the free survey. More about hard water in London.

The sodium question, answered honestly

A softener works by swapping the calcium and magnesium in hard water for sodium. The harder your water, the more sodium is added: roughly 46 mg/l of sodium for every 100 mg/l of hardness removed.

Add that to the sodium already in your supply and, in very hard areas, fully softened water can go over the 200 mg/l limit for drinking water. It's also not recommended for making up baby formula. Every home is different, so we check yours and design around it:

  • 1
    Blended supply

We set your softener to blend in a controlled amount of hard water, keeping sodium down while still beating limescale.

  • 2
    Hard-water bypass tap

A dedicated kitchen tap fed directly from the unsoftened mains for drinking and cooking. We recommend this with every softener.

  • 3
    Reverse osmosis unit

An under-sink RO system removes sodium and most dissolved solids, giving you exceptionally pure drinking water at the kitchen tap.

What about carbon filters? An under-sink carbon filter improves your drinking water at the kitchen tap by reducing chlorine and chemical tastes. It doesn't remove sodium or hardness, and it isn't a whole-house treatment.

Questions

Water softener FAQs

Is London's tap water hard?

Yes. Most of London and the South East has hard or very hard water, typically 250–300+ mg/l of calcium carbonate, because the water passes through chalk and limestone. Use our postcode checker above to see an estimate for your area.

What's the difference between a water softener and a water filter?

A water softener treats the whole house, removing the calcium and magnesium that cause limescale. A filter, such as an under-sink carbon filter or reverse osmosis unit, treats drinking water at one tap to improve taste and remove impurities. Many homes have both.

How long does a water softener installation take?

Most standard installs are completed within a day. We'll confirm timings after your free survey.

Can I still drink softened water?

We usually recommend keeping a hard-water drinking tap in the kitchen, or adding an under-sink carbon or RO filter for drinking water. We'll talk you through the options.

How often should my system be serviced?

We recommend an annual service for softeners, RO and UV systems. Carbon filter cartridges are typically changed every 6–12 months depending on usage.

Do you service systems you didn't install?

Yes. We service and repair all major brands of softener, RO and UV system.

Which areas do you cover?

All of London inside the M25 plus the Home Counties: Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. We're based in Chiswick (W4) and install most often across West and East London.
